Reminder: the last race of the Wednesday Series (3rd September) will start at 18.00 and will be followed by a barbecue.

Have-A-Go day on Saturday 30th August

Poster for Beer festival 2008The Have-a-go day last year was a roaring success, thanks to the combined efforts of Stuart Hart, the Powell clan and everyone who came to help. This year, we'll try to equal, if not exceed, that success by setting a have-a-go day on 30th August.

It's a day open to all members of the public, with of without experience. Just bring clothes you don't mind getting wet, as well as a pair of old trainers. Club members will be ready to take you onboard their dinghies and get you to see what Lancing looks like from the sea. It might suprise you how hard it is to recognise familiar landmarks.

The weather forecast seems ideal for the pursuit race, starting at 6pm, after seeing the last visitors out. Our results guru has compiled a list of starting times, with the slower boats being sent out for the longest time. If you want a long race, get a Topper!

Starting times for pursuit race

The evening is dedicated to a beer festival, together with kebabs of all sorts. To get more details or book a space, please email Sarah, our social secretary at socialsec@lancingsc.org.uk.

Last race of the Wednesday evening series 2008

Start of the race on 27th August

Days are getting shorter and parents are talking about school. It means it's almost the end of the Wednesday series for this year. It's been an eventful series with the discussion on the outer loop earlier in the year, then a few races lost to unpredictable weather. On 27th August, many saw the possibility of a decent sail and 22 boats turned up. It almost felt like summer again!

The last race on 3rd September will be followed, as usual, by a barbecue. If there's beer left in the kegs after the beer festival, it will be the perfect opportunity to celebrate the longest series in the calendar. See you there!

Wet and windy weekend for A&O Regatta and open meetings

A and O Regatta as it could have beenDon't believe the photo. It wasn't like this AT ALL!

With strong gusts and horizontal rain, only the brave ones ventured on the sea for the A&O regatta during the Bank holiday weekend. The open meetings for the LaserIIs and the Streakers saw a handful of boats taking part in exciting conditions. It was a baptism of fire for one of the Streaker visitors who'd only been sailing once or twice at sea, on light days. Well, he did very well and so did all the participants to the event.

Alan Simmons has written a couple of thorough reports, one for our own FORUM (see Alan's report) and another one for Yachts and Yachting online magazine.

The LaserIIs weren't left behind, with Mike Croker writing down his impressions of the weekend for Yachts and Yachting. Losing the crew might not have been the quickest way to go round the course...

Great British pastime

August should have been a month full of events, both informal and organised, with families coming for a leisure afternoon on the beach, playing with sailboats in the waves... Yerknow, summer. Instead of this, we got November conditions with many races blown off. Blame it on climate change, they say. It certainly allows the regular crowd to indulge in this great British pastime: moan about the weather.
This year, I think they've got a point!
