The forty-seventh Annual General Meeting of the club will be held at the clubhouse, Shopsdam Road, Lancing, at 3.00 pm on Sunday 25th November 2007. The bar will close at 2.45 pm.
Please do not park in Shopsdam Road.
The notice for the AGM was posted along with the latest issue of AnchorLine.
11th November, between two cancelled Sundays, we were lucky to see a rare sight on the Lancing shores. A big bird of prey took off from Shoreham and came swooping down on us.
Ollie Hobson (Contender Ollie, a.k.a. Hobbo in other sailing spheres) and his dad Robin first called the club to make sure there was a race on that day, then tacked their Osprey all the way up to Lancing. They took part in both races and flew down the waves on the windy reaches, then shouted the PY number to the rescue boat, waved it goodbye and got back to Shoreham in no time at all. A little later, both helm and crew arrived at the bar, having packed up their boat in a record time. One of the latest photo-galleries on this site records the moment and gives an idea of the size of the waves that day. Launching was all a matter of timing, once again, and being very swift once over the breakers. No wonder why Ollie and Robin didn't want the Osprey to touch the beach...

Current series
The Winter Series is our last series of the year and runs from 4th November to Boxing Day, weather permitting. On Boxing Day, we are planning to welcome sailors and non sailors with mulled wine and mince pies. Even if the idea of going afloat on the South coast of England at the end of December doesn't rock your boat, come along for a walk on the beach and share a bit more of the festive spirit!

For the second year running, the Bonfire Night was a great success. On the 3rd November, on a clear Saturday afternoon, Trevor Barling, Andrew Nash, Bob Trevis and plenty of friends dropped a whole lot of pallets on the beach and, with invaluable help from Jade Bliss and Maëlle Jackson, proceeded to stack and arrange them in a pleasing manner. At 6pm, when the event was supposed to start, there were only half a dozen people in the club. At 6.15, Don was rushed off his feet at the bar and a quiet row of Guys sat outside. One rogue guy escaped the bonfire by the skin of his teeth; to understand, see the photo-gallery of the evening.
Standing in the light and heat of the roaring fire, we all enjoyed a firework display and many of us twirled sparklers in the attempt to write their name in light. "Nick", "Ann" and "Jim" were lucky; "Christopher", "Isabelle" and "Jacqueline" not so lucky. Meanwhile, Jerry and Jan were busy in the kitchen serving soup and jacket potatoes, perfect comfort food after the chill of the night.
Just as last year, it felt much later than it really was at the end of the evening and many people stayed on, propping the bar and chatting for a while. All in all, it was a friendly evening and everyone enjoyed the atmosphere. A big thank you to Gavin the supervisor, all helpers and to everyone who came to enjoy the evening.

The Topper league has come to the cut-off point at the end of the Commodore's Cup, to allow the results to be compiled well in time for the prize-giving. This year, the overall winner of the Topper League is our esteemed Topper captain, Nick Muggridge. Not only is he an excellent sailor, but he tends to be the only one who's certain of the course, so other Toppers follow him faithfully. Seriously, both Nick and Angela, who takes second place, have consistently sailed very well this season and are now enjoying the success. Well done to you two and to Jennifer Austin who gets 3rd place.
The eagerly-disputed Topper Novice trophy goes to Katie Hedgecock this year and she was presented with it at the Dinner and Dance on 17th November. Katie has improved tremendously since last year and the trophy is a fair reward for an excellent season. In second place, Elodie Jackson has given her a good run for her money. Congratulations to both girls and to all participants.
The Topper League is the only league at Lancing Sailing Club and it is regularly compiled and updated by Nick Muggridge. Although the 2007 results are published, he will keep the League running throughout the winter series on an informal basis.

It's fast becoming a Lancing SC tradition: all children are invited to the club on Sunday 16th December, from 3pm to 5pm, for the Christmas party. We'll have food, songs and games, plus the visit of a very special bearded, red-clad person who might (yeah, might...) bring a few pressies.
If you'd like to come along, please could you let me know as soon as possible because I need to get in touch with the elves. E-mail isa.j@ntlworld.com or call 01273 703512. Thank you.

The Dinner and Dance location has gone wildly west this year: the new venue was at least 50 yards west of the Beach Hotel, where the club had held this yearly event for the last 24 years or so. On 17th November, 74 members got together at the Burlington Hotel in Worthing for the annual formal dinner, dance and prizegiving. Hotel staff were efficient and welcoming, and the evening picked up a good pace from the start. Many people felt it went very fast, with hardly a moment to get bored. If you like dancing, that is...
To begin with, we all met in a reception room where we were served Buck's Fizz and orange juice. It gave everyone a chance to catch up with the news, meet friends and find out where they were going to sit. After a very tasty dinner and a few early-season Christmas crackers (as well as those deafening paper trumpets - see photo gallery), Mike's supersize gavel banged again and we listened to the speeches. When we woke up, it was time for the prize-giving and everyone cheered and clapped the happy winners.
We then retreated to the lounge while the main room was cleared in preparation for the dance. The music suited all ages, with a strong emphasis on 1970s and 1980s pop songs, which seemed to agree with most guests. The dance floor was busy all night.
Most people disappeared around 1am, leaving only a few to visit the night club. Everyone thought it was a great evening and thanked the organisers for such a good job. A thread's been started on the forum and a photo gallery is available on this site.
