Pauline Lynch

After a very brave battle against breast cancer Pauline Lynch passed away suddenly and peacefully on Friday 26 January 2007 at Worthing Hospital.

A service on Monday 12 February in the South Chapel, Woodvale Crematorium, Brighton, was followed by a gathering at the Shaftesbury Room, Worthing Leisure Centre, Worthing.
Pauline was a happy, bubbly person and numerous friends came to say goodbye and provide a support to Steve, Paul and Jodie.

On behalf of the club, we would like to express our deepest sympathies to Steve, Paul and Jodie at this sad time.

Soldier cited twice for bravery fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan
Hero of Helmand to receive the Military Cross
by Ben Parsons

The Argus reportIN AFGHANISTAN'S troubled Helmand Province, coalition forces learn to expect the unexpected.
But when Flight Lieutenant Matt Carter went to a Christmas drinks party after an eventful six-month tour had finished, he was completely taken by surprise. The RAF had invited him and his comrades to a plush hotel before telling them they were to be awarded military honours.
Flt Lt Carter, of Worthing, will receive the Military Cross for his bravery during battles with the Taliban militia.
The 32-year old said: "It was a bit of a shock to be honest. The Air Force had disguised the whole thing."
Flt Lt Carter, who grew up in Offington Lane where his parents still live, is a member of the Royal Air Force Regiment, which acts as the infantry arm of the RAF.
His role in Afghanistan as a forward air controller was to accompany the Parachute Regiment and guide bombers to their targets when fighting started.
In the two battles where he was cited for bravery, he had to move to the front line alone and under fire to make sure RAF planes hit the right targets, allowing the paratroopers to complete their missions.

The first citation for Flt Lt Carter praises him for "fearlessly exposing himself to significant risk" and "repeatedly risking his life" on June 4, to ensure ground forces had air support in a six-hour battle in a Taliban compound.
The second citation was for a night raid on July 14 targeting a "high value Taliban leader", in which he and a comrade jumped 15ft from a Chinook, in the dark, before calling down air support to destroy a Taliban position.
The citation reads: "Flt Lt Carter's gallantry was again decisive and his selfless actions have been recognised by the award of the Military Cross."
He told the Argus: "I was so busy thinking about what I had to do I didn't give much thought to the consequences.
"You accept there's a risk there. You do your best to do your job and the training gets you through."

Twenty British servicemen have been killed in fighting in the southern province of Helmand [last] year.
Flt Lt Carter said: "We were very much going over there to try to bring some security to the Afghans in Helmand, which is incredibly lawless.
"The Taliban were stopping us doing this. The only thing to do was to start to defend ourselves."
Flt Lt Carter said the threat of the Taliban attack, by mortar shell or suicide bombing, was ever-present as troops carried out security patrols and other duties such as supplying villages with fresh water and medical supplies.
He said: "It's a strain but you get attuned to it."
He believes the Army can succeed in bringing Helmand to heel but in a matter of years rather than months.
He said: "It won't be easy. I believe the British troops, with the Americans, Canadians and Dutch, are doing a good job and are making a difference to people's lives.
"If we do that, there's no reason we can't defeat the Taliban."

Matt Carter in Afghanistan Flt Lt Carter went to Worthing High School before training as a PE teacher at Chichester University.
he and Ali, whose family home is 300m from his own, met at the Cloisters pub on High Street, Worthing.
The couple, who now lives in Bury St Edmunds to be near Flt Lt Carter's barracks in Colchester, will be spending Christmas in Worthing.
Flt Lt Carter's mum, Jo, said: "We are absolutely over the moon for him. We have a hero in our midst."

Flt Lt Carter will receive his award from the Queen in the Spring.

Hot news

The February Sunday Lunch was well attended and we enjoyed very warm atmosphere. Not as warm as the crew onboard Cloudbreak, who left Brighton Marina in the morning. Lynn Eccles reports for the Argus:

Businessman left gutted by boat blaze by Lynn Eccles

A businessman watched in horror as his luxury yacht burst into flames and sank just minutes into a trip out to sea.

The burning yacht off the Shoreham coast Mike Knowles, of Britannia Court, Brighton, was with five friends on his £400,000 cruiser, the Cloudbreak, yesterday afternoon when it caught fire off the coast of Shoreham.
The group were taking the 58ft Sea Princess out for a spin for the first time since October after an expensive refit of the vessel during the winter.
But they were forced to abandon ship at 1.20pm when fire broke out on board just moments after it had pulled out of its mooring in Brighton Marina.
Fellow sailors helped them onto their vessels before lifeboat crews from Brighton and Shoreham took them back to the shore.
A plume of smoke at least a thousand feet high could be seen from Brighton and Hove, although the blaze was at least ten miles away just outside Shoreham Harbour.
The vessel burned for two hours as RNLI and coastguard crews had to stand by and watch because it was too dangerous to approach. It sank at 3.18pm.

The Maritime & Coastguard Agency has launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.

 Coming soon

Get in shape for the new sailing season! The LSC bike ride will happen again this year, on 18th March 2007. It's Mothers' Day on that day so we will need to know numbers pretty soon in order to book a table in a pub.

The idea is to leave from Bramber Castle car park (bypassing the awkward muddy track along the banks of the river Adur) and have a break at Southwater before heading back down south. The café there serves hot and cold food, basic stuff like Cornish pasties, baked potatoes or toasties. The cakes are seriously yummy, hehe... The centre is situated near the little lake, a lovely place even in today's drizzle. There is also a big play area for the little ones!

I have spoken to the staff there and they have taken note of a group of 20 to 25 coming down on them on the 18th March. We're on!
We should start to congregate in Bramber Castle car park from 9.30 a.m., with the view to leave at 10. It gives us plenty of time to ride the 13-odd miles to Southwater without pushing it.
Even if we don't need to book formally, could you please let me know for sure whether you're going to come. I don't want to leave anyone behind. Call us on 01273 703512 or email by clicking here (or PM on the forum).

Now... on yer bike!

 Work parties

Your club needs you on 10th March and 25th March!
Julian, our bosun, is organising 2 work parties in March. Activities start at 9.30 a.m. and should be finished by lunchtime. For more details, keep an eye on the forum and/or contact Julian by private message.

Coming even later

BHF logo - Visit BHF website17 June - London to Brighton Bike Ride 2007
This yearly event will take place on 17th June this year. Last year, a small team of enthusiastic (and slightly mad) cyclists from the club were part of the 27,000 riders wheeling it from Clapham Common to Brighton Madeira Drive. Funds are raised for the British Heart Foundation and there is no minimum amount to raise. The BHF website will tell you all there is to know and the entry forms are available by clicking here. Last year, the 18th June was a warm, sunny day and we all had a great time. Bonus: there was no wind so we didn't even miss any sailing!
Application forms are going fast, so if you are interested in joining the LSC team, please contact Isabelle on 01273 703512 or email by clicking here. Happy training!
