 Calendar 2011

After many discussions, deliberations and poring over tide charts, the Sailing Secretary has published the final version of the Calendar 2011. Have a look at the page on this site or download and print a copy in a .pdf format.

Here are a few dates to notice, in no particular order:

Have-a-Go Days

Have-go day

Two Have-a-Go days are planned for this year: the first is on Saturday 11th June and will be preceded by the Youth Regatta. Over the last few years, the Youth Regatta has been marred by strong winds, so the sailing committee has decided to make it a fun event, with games and silly prizes. Even if it's blowing a gale, there will be things to do!

The second Have-a-Go day is going to take place on Saturday 20th August, to coincide with the Shoreham Airshow. This date has proved to be popular with passers-by, who came for a walk on the beach and watch the planes and had to admit that the best place to watch the airshow was from the sea.

Of course, as with all events, the club needs its members to help. Bring friends, bring equipment - buoyancy aids, etc - and take people out... The more the merrier!

Open meetings

Lancing Laser open

The Laser Open traditionally finds its place towards the end of May, depending on the tides. This year will follow the same pattern, with Sunday 22nd May as a chosen date. It gives our occasional Laser sailors time to dig out the wetsuits, change a few bits on their boats and take part in the action! Notice of race and sailing instructions will be posted on our Sailing and Notices of Race pages closer to the time.

A little later than in the previous years, the Topper Open will keep us all busy on Saturday 9th July. Exams will be over, school holidays not quite there and the water should be a little warmer. Hop on a Topper and join the race! Again, the notice of race and sailing instructions will be posted on our Sailing and Notices of Race pages closer to the time.

Laser Bonanza

Laser Bonanza on 17th July 2011

New this year, the Laser Bonanza! David Trout and Steve Lynch, who look after the interests of the Laser fleet in the sailing committee, will do their best (and more) to get as many Lasers as possible on the water on Sunday 17th July. There will be training offered for all boats and all skills and other classes will benefit too! With so many Lasers in the boat compound, we're quite likely to get a great turnout.

Similarly, the Topper fleet is planning a Totally Topper Time when several dates are being considered. More about it later in the year...

Pursuit race

It's been a bit of a hit-and-miss with pursuit racing over the last few years. Often programmed at the end of busy days (training or Have-a-Go days), the only participants were those who had enough stamina to launch their boat again and go sailing before hitting the bar.

This year, there's no confusion, there's only one pursuit race on the programme. It's going to happen on Saturday 2nd July and will follow the timetable established last year, unless our results guru tweaks the times a bit. Whether you're on a Topper and you get your full one-hour sail, or you're on a fast mean machine and you go caning along, trying to catch up everybody in the mere 18 minutes allocated, the outcome is the same: there's a barbecue after the race, where everyone can unwind and enjoy the evening. For info, you can see the start times allocated to each fleet in the file Start times for a pursuit race of 60 minutes and 75 minutes on this website.

Family fun weekend

To conclude this brief review of the sailing calendar, there is going to be a new and improved version of the Family Fun Weekend. On the Saturday last year, the weather wasn't helping, with gale force wind and strong chop. However, we had one of the most fantastic social evenings in recent years, as well as a great time on and off the water on the Sunday. Some members regretted that there wasn't any formal racing included in the order of events. Well this year, there will be racing too! More to come later...

 Cobnor weekends, Feva team racing

Cobnor residential weekends

News from Crawley Mariners: the two Cobnor weekends this year will be on 8th to 10th April 2011 for the first visit and 14th to 16th October 2011 in the autumn.

Diana Thompson, who is the driving force behind the training at Crawley Mariners Yacht Club would like to invite four of our Lancing Sailing club youths to take part. Because of the new way Cobnor centre is run, she needs to give definite numbers at least six weeks in advance.

If you're between 13 and 19 and you'd like to have great fun for a weekend, give Isabelle a ring on 01273 703512. Elodie and Georgi would be able to answer all your questions, they have been to Cobnor many times and are always asking for more!

Feva team racing

Feva team racing on Hedgecourt lake in Sep 2010

In September 2010, the two LSC Youths Fevas took part in a team racing day organised by CMYC, on their lake at Hedgecourt.

This event is happening again this year, during the same weekend, on Saturday 10th September 2011. Last year, the quick boat-swapping, close-quarter manoeuvering and hampering boats from the other team was a great success with our two Lancing SC sailors. More to come this year!

 Membership renewals for 2011

Lancing SC youths in waves

The membership renewal form, sent to all members with the latest issue of Anchorline, should have arrived with you by the end of January or the first days of February. If you haven't seen anything yet, please drop a line to Julian Wilkins, our membership secretary memsec@lancingsc.org.uk, to get a copy.

Each membership form contains the personal details of the member. Please take a bit of time to check if all the details are correct, especially email addresses and car registrations. Make sure that the form lists the craft(s) you keep at Lancing SC, including windsurf equipment and kayaks. Kayaks should be insured too.

Julian Wilkins has posted a list of recommendations on the forum. If you have any questions or queries, please get in touch with him by email, on the forum, by private message or by phone.

 Four work parties coming soon

Bob Trevis and Ian Sykes racing in April 2009

It’s that time of year: it hardly seems any time that the racing has finished that we need to start thinking about waking the club up again and preparing for another season.

Work parties

Last year’s work parties were excellent, very productive and much was achieved. The same needs to happen again this year. There are a number of projects which will need a lot of time and effort to get done. Unfortunately my early prediction is they are nearly all outside so fingers cross for a milder spring!

A couple of the projects need a bit of design and planning..... anyone fancy helping out? Please let me know if you can and we can get our heads together.

I have planned 4 work parties on consecutive Sundays. Mother's Day is in April this year. The dates are:

  • Sunday February 27th
  • Sunday March 6th
  • Sunday March 13th and
  • Sunday March 20th.

Please come down, get some jobs done, catch up with everyone and get in the mood for some sailing.

Bob T

Dutyman 2011 is ready for action

Check your duties on Dutyman

Over the last few years, Di Croker, Lancing Sailing Club rota manager, has used a software to handle and allocate duties to all members. Because our club is run by its members, for its members, everybody has to make an effort to do duties. If you're crying out one duty because of the old argument "I haven't sailed enough this year", it means that someone else will have to give up their sailing time to fill in your spot. Some people in 2010 have done over 10 duties, all from the goodness of their heart. Ok, rant over...

Just to say that Dutyman for 2011 is now ready for action. You can confirm your duties, swap with someone else or volunteer to fill in a gap.

If you don't have your login details, please contact Di Croker at rota@lancingsc.org.uk. She will provide you with the details you need.
Once logged in, the duties you are allocated will show in red. Click on "List view" then "Continuous" if you would like to see the whole year at once. A thorough userguide will be published on this site soon.
