Friday 18th is a fun evening!

Let's hope the weather is kind on Friday 18th July. From 18.30 onwards, the club is putting together a fun evening, targeted at everyone who fancies a break from pure racing. The event welcomes youth groups too, from the Sea Cadets to the Scouts and Brownies. On the evening, there will be games on the water, with 1 or 2-man boats. A great way to improve boat-handling without noticing!
This fun evening is opened to all ages and all classes. If you want to unwind from a busy week at work and make the most of the evening sunshine, get in your wetsuit, hop on your boat. Come and have fun!

The same format will be used on Saturday 2nd August, for the Funday. again, this day will be open to all members, with games and informal competitions. There might be a few goofy prizes too!

 Europe Nationals this month

Europe fleet

This month, Lancing sailing club will welcome the Europe Class Association National Championship 2008, on 26th and 27th. There will be a training day on Friday 25th July, open to visitors. Entries have been coming and a list of entrants to date is published on this website. See the dedicated Europe Nationals page on this website for details.
On the same subject, the organisers still need volunteers to help with this event. A volunteers list is placed in the foyer at the club. Please come and jot down your name, even if you can help for a little bit. As they say on the telly, every little helps...

 Team racing on 2nd August

Lasers can take part in team racing on 2nd AugustHave you ever wanted to win a race by sailing slowly? Have you ever thought that there should be more to sailing than chasing or being chased by other boats around the cans? Then team racing’s what you’ve been waiting for!

Team racing consists of 2 teams sailing against each other with the boats in each team working together to improve their team’s overall score without worrying about their own individual result. Races are usually very short, and very tactical with lots of close contact - well, hopefully not actual contact! By positioning your boat close to an opponent and on their wind, you can slow them down (and maybe yourself!) to benefit a team mate. It is very good for improving boat handling and rules knowledge, and is just great fun!
Why not come along on Saturday 2nd August (same as the Funday) and try your hand? We can race with 2 boat or 3 boat teams, but they do need to be in the same class, so we need at least 4 Lasers, Toppers or RS200s to turn up on the day.

 Can't always be the same...

As with every club or association run by volunteers, there's a constant need for new ideas and fresh enthusiasm in Lancing SC. Our club is one of the friendliest sailing clubs around, with a lively atmosphere and great emphasis on families. A good place to be...
However, it usually falls on the same few people to organise and carry out the endless jobs needed around the place. These people also have a busy life (yeh, they do...) and would welcome help and support. You'd get to know more members and have a good time too - it's not all doom and gloom, far from that. So, if you could help around the club, from rescue boats to canteen shopping, from sailing planning to social events, or simply turning up for work parties, it would be great.
It's not a 24/7 commitment we're after. A few hours a month could make all the difference. Thank you.

What happened on 28th June?

28th June this year was supposed to be a great day. With the Youth Regatta starting the show at 1pm, it was supposed to be followed by Bring-a-friend day, a pursuit race and a well-earned Pie and an Pint evening. Phew!
As it happens, the Youth Regatta was blown off (feeling of déjà vu creeping in...) and so was the friend day. But... if the weather had been milder, it would have been a struggle to get things going anyway, due to a lack of volunteers. Because half-a-dozen of the usual suspects couldn't be there that day, nothing happened.
There were volunteers lists and posters around the club but they remained virtually empty (apart from Alan Simmons, thank you!).
Next events at the club are listed on the Calendar page and explained in this news page. If you'd like to come along, take part or help for a bit, let us know! Thank you.

 Lancing in the bigger world

Lancing Sailing club members are also taking part in open meetings all over the place. On the forum, Alan Simmons publishes regular reports from his travels to the land of the Streakers while Nick Muggridge has started a thread dedicated to Ollie Page's achievements as a RS800 crew. Well done to everyone who carries Lancing Sailing club flag out in the bigger world.

Talking about bigger world, Jerry Hone, Tony White and Mark Jackson went all the way to Tuscany to take part in the Contender Europeans Championships. Not a holiday, noooooooo...
Here's the report Jerry wrote after the event.

Contender European Championship 2008

Contenders on the beach in PuntAla Three of our Contender sailors, Tony White, Mark Jackson and Jerry Hone set out in early June on the trek south to the Tuscany coast in Italy for the class's European championships at PuntAla - Kay White and Jan Hone went along too. Tony took a double stack trailer behind his camper van on the 1000 mile journey as Mark was flying in a few days later. Mark's complex logistics meant that the boat Tony took to Italy was destined to sit on its trailer and be transported back to Denmark after the event, while Mark would sail his brand new Polish built boat being delivered to the event from Germany, together with a new British rig! Everyone thought he was very lucky when it all turned up!

The weather in PuntAla at this time of year is supposed to be very predictable - a 10-15 knot sea breeze will start at 11am and stop at 6 pm - you can set your clocks by it! However, "global warming" coupled with a very shallow low pressure area centred on Corsica meant that the week was marred by light shifty winds, much to the dismay of the 92 competitors from all over the world, with long delays and 4 races abandoned. In the end 7 races were completed. The first day of racing was held in excellent Contender weather. A couple of thunderstorms over the land helped to improve the conditions on other days but this was not consistent.
The weather was great, the sea was a beautiful shade of blue, the mosquitoes were vicious and the socialising was fun - plenty of pizza, pasta and beer, and meeting all the other Contenderistas made up for light winds.

 LATEST FROM GERMANY

On 12th July in Warnemunde, one of the 2 British teams won the title of World Champions team racing in the class International 14. The team captain was no other than our own Sam Littlejohn. Sam and Dicken McLean, his crew from Island Barn who's been to play at Lancing a few times this year, led the team to victory, leaving the German competitors and the other UK team behind. A big well done to Sam, Dicken and their team!
Read more about it on the International 14 CA British website.
