Have-A-Go day on 11th June
The club was buzzing on Saturday 11th June during Lancing SC Have-a-Go Day. Our careful preparation and advertising paid off as we welcomed many visitors all afternoon. Despite the odd capsize for some, all the would-be sailors had a great time and came back on the beach with large grins. All visitors appreciated the club's frienliness and some took advantage of our promotional offer to become members. If you're a seasoned LSC member, don't forget to greet and help new faces!
Youth Regatta 2011
Update
Despite increasing windspeed, the Youth Regatta 2011 was a great success. Everyone enjoyed the games and fun races. See you all next year for more!
Hi everyone,
All youths and juniors are invited to take part in our Youth Regatta on Saturday 11th June.
We'll have games, silly races, prizes and lots of fun!
All members under 18 years old are welcome. Be ready to get on the water at 11am.
If you're still a child at heart and would like to help or for any more info, drop us a line topperfleet@lancingsc.org.uk. You can also ring 01273 703512 or talk to us at the club.
We have about 30 Toppers in the boat compound and we're trying to get as many as possible on the water on Sunday 12th June.
There will be games in the morning and racing in the afternoon. Coaching and prizes and lots of fun!
Normal racing won't be affected.
For more info, please contact Georgi and Elodie on topperfleet@lancingsc.org.uk or call 01273 703512.
The Topper league is regularly updated in the Results page, with a breakdown of points for each helm. Click on the graph to view the details. In the Topper league, helms in blue are competing for the Topper Novice Trophy.
Throughout the entire month of June, the Midsummer series will keep Lancing SC sailors busy! 4 short races a day with a triangle (average lap) for races 1 & 3 and triangle-sausage for races 2 & 4. With 3 fleets but one start, it's going to be busy on the line!
Midsummer Series
4 races per day 2 B2B am, 2 B2B pm.
3 fleets using PY handicaps.
Fast 1079 and faster. Laser and slower with PY to 1195 to be in medium. PY 1196 and slower in slow fleet.
Races 1 and 3 are one start, average lap, triangular course with inner course for slow fleet.
Races 2 and 4 are one start, triangle/sausage, not average laps, with inner course for slow fleet.
On 13th May, Pete Matthews gave an informative and entertaining talk on "How to win races without sailing any faster". From pre-race preparation to perfect start and smooth mark rounding, he gave us tips and advice to help us gain a couple of minutes per race. And we all know that these 120 seconds make all the difference.
With the bar open, lovely weather and a good crowd, it was a very pleasant evening indeed. John and Karen McGrath will certainly agree, as they were keen to apply Pete's good advice against him in the next race.
A bit of a mixed bag for the 2011 Lancing SC Club Championship that took place during the last weekend of May. This mini-series of 8 races over 2 days has to include a variety of courses. This year, RO Jerry Hone had to abandon racing on Sunday due to strong winds. On the Monday, he was keen to include as many choices as possible, including a novelty for LSC, an upwind-then-2gybes sort of figure-of-eight. Most people coming off the water said it was fun and something different to do.
In the Results 2011 page, you will see that the battle was fierce at the top, with Carolyn and Sean Dwyer in their RS Vision finally getting the upper hand on Gary Austin in his RS700 only on countback. With the wind picking up during the afternoon, it wasn't easy to keep going. David Trout takes third place but all competitors sailed really hard in this mini-series. Well done to everyone!
Apart from the pursuit race and Hog Roast, a couple of major events are coming to LSC in July.
Topper Open and SE Traveller
The Topper Open will happen on Saturday 9th July, with 5.3 and 4.2 rigs welcome. Registration starts at 9.30 and the day will include 4 races (3 to count). The bar and canteen will be open and LSC members will remember all the good stuff from Totally Topper Time, so get those Toppers out!
Visitors and serious competitors - the people who normally win opens - will be interested in the Notice of Race. Entry fee is £10.
Family Fun Weekend - 23rd and 24th July
Last year, despite strong winds on the Saturday, the Family Fun Weekend was a success for its first year. This year, we're trying to make it bigger and better, with racing included and plenty of fun!
The sailing committee is still at the preparation stage but has already secured the help of a RYA coach and instructor for both days. As well as games and activities, there will be plenty of opportunities for training, race practice and asking questions.
If you think you can help in setting up the event, if you know you'll be available or if you have plenty of ideas and a will to see them through, please get in touch! Sailing Secretary Gary Austin sailingsec@lancingsc.org.uk with his sailing committee welcomes your help, thanks.
If you are a member of the social networking website Facebook, you can join the Lancing Sailing Club group. You don't need to be a LSC member to join the group, it's open to everyone.
