Poster for Have-a-go day on Sat 7th JulyHave-a-go day

This year, the Have-a-Go day is happening on 7th July, from 2pm. If you fancy trying dinghy sailing but never had the opportunity, here's your chance! Similarly, if you've been sailing a class and would like to have a taster session on another type of boat, nothing's simpler. Just come along on the 7th July and talk to us.

Youth Regatta

After cancelling the Youth Regatta three years in a row, the date of the 7th July has been chosen for this ill-fated event. It is on the same day as the Have-a-Go day, but starts at 11am. Let's hope that this change of date will bring gentler winds and enthusiastic youth sailors to battle on the waves!

Busy last weekend

Pursuit race

Jenn Austin in her TopperThe first pursuit race was disputed between 9 boats and a drop in the wind strength, in conjunction with excellent boat handling, gave Jennifer Austin a clear victory. Di Croker in her Laser 4.7 was second and the rest of the fleet was hot on her heels. While we were sailing, Bob Aldridge was slaving over a hot grill to prepare a delicious barbecue. Because the wind had the courtesy of dying before the evening, it was perfect barbecue weather; we stayed outside until late until we realised that we had to be up early in the morning for the Topper Open.
The second pursuit race of the year is scheduled for the 1st September and will be followed by the Beer Festival. Time to work up a thirst on the boats before sampling the bar!

The weather conditions weren't ideal for the Topper Open this year, but the 29 helms managed 3 races between fog and dying wind. Full report on Yachts & Yachting online and photo-gallery in our Galleries page on this site.
This year, we could count 8 Lancing helms in the Open and everyone did their best in testing conditions. The top LSC placings were 8th for Nick Muggridge, 9th for Matt Goacher who was racing a Topper for the first time, and 10th for Angela Davey. In the morning races, Angela and Nick had a good battle with Nick zipping in front of Angela at the last second. Quite entertaining to watch...

Training news

As last year, our training officer has planned a series of training events and has placed posters and enrolment sheets in the club. Unfortunately, no one has expressed an interest yet, but we're trying to target beginners in racing as well as improvers in their class. If you have other ideas and suggestions, please let us know!

Training events are for the moment scheduled on Friday evenings and the odd Saturday. Other dates should be published for class-specific coaching.
- Friday nights open coaching sessions on the water from 6pm on:

  • 15th June
  • 29th June

- Saturday racing techniques sessions from 10am to 4pm on:

  • 23rd June

There will be another 3 days of specific training for Lasers, Toppers and asymmetric boats, but these dates have yet to be confirmed.

More details about training sessions in the Training page on this site.

Last month

View gallery May has been quite a challenging month for LSC sailors, with strong winds and heavy rain disrupting both Bank Holiday weekends. A lull halfway through the month made us believe that summer had arrived but conditions during the Laser Open brought us back to reality. A photo-gallery of the Laser Open is available in the Galleries page.
The event report has been published in Yachts & Yachting online magazine. Read the article here!

Social scene

After a very enjoyable and well attended Quiz Night on 19th May, organised by Jerry and Jan Hone, the next social event is the barbecue following the Pursuit Race this Saturday (9th June).

David T.writes:

Jerry and Jan’s recent Quiz Night was a great success and was well attended. Eight teams entered the quiz which had a good mixture of topics for both the young and the slightly older!
Half way through, Isabelle and Mark served an excellent meal, and the teams tried to recognise countries from outlines on a map. A Disney films picture quiz also kept us thinking while we ate.
At the end of the evening, the winners were the catering team of Isabelle and Mark Jackson with Steve Phillips. In second place was the team led by Elodie Jackson. You obviously had to be called Jackson to have a chance this time!
Many thanks to all the organisers for the preparation and hard work that went into creating such an enjoyable evening.

  • Medium (PY1078-1184)
  • Slow (PY1185+)
  • Sequence - Fast, Laser Plus, Topper plus
  • Course: triangle/sausage

Fleet racing in light winds on Wednesday 23 MayWednesday 9th May was the first day of the Wednesday evening series, which entertain us every year with a rich collection of sunsets and suddenly dropping sea breezes. As usual, you can order your Fish&Chips or pizza before the race and enjoy a well-earned dinner analysing the race or propping the bar. A quick visit to the 2006 photo gallery will give you an idea.
