 New series this month

With the month of June, we're starting the Midsummer series. The format was given a facelift this year, with 4 races per Sunday (2 back-to-back in the morning, then another 2 after lunch). There's only one start but three fleets, and the course is a triangle - letter T on the flag board - with an inner course for the slow fleet. Sounds fun? It certainly was for all participants in the first day, with a fresh breeze in the morning dying down a bit in the afternoon.
Early results show that Karen and John are leading comfortably in the fast fleet, Alan in his Streaker is ahead of all the Lasers in the medium fleet and Elodie is top Topper in the slow fleet. Many more changes to come in the next few weeks.

Results are posted in the RESULTS page and the Midsummer guide for 2009 is available in the Racing page.

 Success for Club Championship formula

Brad and Georgi on RS400 Trevor on Laser With 8 short races in 2 days on a variety of courses, the Club Championships brought a bit of fresh air to the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May. The weather was glorious even if the wind died down on the Monday, leaving the fleet to play hide-and-seek with the tide.

A total of 39 boats took part over the two days and results show that it was a tough battle at the top. It gave an ideal opportunity for people with a busy lifestyle to take part in a complete series or for regular sailors to try something different. The race team selected trapezoids, triangles and upwind-downwind courses over the two days, giving a fair chance to every class of boat. After the weekend, we all heard very positive comments about the Championships from occasional and regular sailors alike. A winning formula that will happen again next year, I'm sure.

 Topper training with Mark Heather

Launching the boats in the morning Blue skies and a gentle breeze seemed to be perfect conditions in the morning of the Topper training, on 23rd May. But... after coach Mark Heather's briefing, the wind disappeared, leaving 18 Toppers fighting the tide for a while.

Fortunately, after a few hesitations, the wind settled to a perfect force 2 south-westerly and all Topper helms made the most of the day. Former Topper World champion Mark Heather helped everyone improve their boat handling skills tremendously. After several games involving close manoeuvering and a lot of bumping into each other, the fleet practised race starts and going round a small course.

All sailors were very enthusiastic and gained a tremendous amount of confidence. A very positive day!

Toppers at Lancing

Beating during the Topper open Brilliant sunshine and fresh winds provided challenging sailing conditions for the 23 helms who attended the Lancing S.C. Topper Open & SE Traveller on Sat 30th May. Our own 12 helms competing included several novices, Katie T, Charlotte, Isla, Liam & Joel, most fresh from race training at Lancing last week. The first race was sailed in a steady f3 ESE wind; three leading visiting helms, Charlotte Fenn, Oliver Greber and Daniel Fenn, holding their places throughout. Angela was our leading helm in this race, finishing 6th. In race 2 the wind freshened to a f4+, with bigger waves. Eager visitor Clive Jackson was again OCS, and over-reacted by dipping line and later returning to clear it a second time and capsizing during a gybe. It’s to his credit that he managed to sail his way back to finish 5th, closely followed by LSC helms Nick and Katie H. In this longer and more demanding race the leader was again C. Fenn with Jack Spence losing out to Greber in lap3.

In the afternoon, the start in race 3 was postponed during the start sequence, as the NE wind battled with a SE sea breeze. Once the wind settled, the race was re-started, however on the first windward leg the wind very shifty and variable in strength, testing the competitors’ skills and concentration; helms who hit either corner gaining over those took a middle track. Helms rounding the windward mark soon found they had to beat again on the next leg of the course as the wind shifted NE, later settling again to f3 SE. Spence held his lead to win ahead of D. Fenn and C. Fenn, with Nick and Georgie scoring their highest places of the day 5th & 9th respectively. In the final race C.Fenn again led from the start, and proceeded to pull away from the fleet, finishing an amazing leg ahead of Jackson and Spence, and becoming event winner with three firsts!

Overall official results: 1st Charlotte Fenn, Pevensey Bay; 2nd Jack Spence, Papercourt; 3rd Oliver Greber, Pevensey Bay; 4th Daniel Fenn, Pevensey Bay; 5th Clive Jackson, Papercourt; 6th James Skulczuk, Medway/Bewl.

Top 6 LSC results: 7th Nick Muggridge, 10th Katie Hedgecock, 11th Georgi Ridler, 14th Isabelle Jackson, 15th Angela Davey, 17th Katie Trevis
