  • Commodore's Cup

October has begun with a blast: racing was cancelled on the 1st October, in winds topping 51 mph (F9). Even our most-hardened Topper sailor decided against a quick sail.
However, despite a very high tide and big waves crashing on the beach, we did manage to sail on Sunday 8th October.

    Colin and Ali in Laser2

    Still good-looking, don't you think?

You can view a few more action shots from Sunday in the photo gallery that was bound to appear here on this website. Conditions were quite lively, as you can see by the number of capsizes (I wasn't cruel, honest...), with a strong South veering SSW force 4 wind. A notch under, and we could have seen a big red flappy thing in front of the newest boat... Oh well, maybe next week - and maybe next week, Gary will have the decency to capsize, at least once!

  •  Series results

Thanks to Mike, all results are up-to-date in the Results page. The long AM series concluded at the end of September with a clear victory for Ian Beale on his RS400 in the fast fleet, while Andy Carter won the Laser fleet after a healthy battle with Paul Fewster. In the Topper fleet, Jennifer Austin managed to stay on top but Joey gave her a run for her money.
Well done to all of you.

More asymmetric exploits in the Summer PM series, with Karen Littlejohn and John McGrath winning the series. Alan Simmons unashamedly took advantage of Jim Powell's absence to clock another victory with his Streaker.
The series wasn't best attended by the Topper fleet, but Brad Phillips had two good results and came first.

Surely, all competitors are keen to start the next battle!

 Youth news

Last weekend (30th Sep - 1st Oct), autumn was definitely in the air. Strong gusts and squally showers gave an added interest to the Cobnor weekend. Four of our younger members took part in this highly-enjoyable event, organised with terrific efficiency and never-flaying energy by Diana Thompson, Crawley Mariners' human dynamo. Her consideration to all and attention to detail made this weekend a time to remember.
It was "Girl Power" from Lancing this time round, with Emma, Katie, Jenn and Sarani joining the 16 enthusiasts from CYMC in windswept Cobnor. Saturday morning, everyone played in the harbour, to get a feel for the boat and get to know one another better. Weaving in and out of the moored yachts provided excellent boat-handling practice.

In the afternoon, the fleet of Bosuns, Magnos, Laser2 and RS Vision sailed to Dell Quay, enjoying the open waters.
With the small-sailed Bosuns reefed to handkerchief-size, the spinnakers tucked in "to keep your feet warm", sailing on Sunday was exhilarating but quite challenging at times. After a few capsizes from the Magnos, a Bosun full of water and various unexpected landings in the mudflats, the fleet was brought back to base early. That's when Diana realised the wind was on a steady Force 7 gusting 8. Great achievement for all participants, especially Katie who was awarded, together with Laura from CMYC, the prize for "Best improver". Well done, Katie!

Bonfire Night
A bit of advance warning: the Bonfire Night will happen (yes, it will this time!) on Sunday 5th November. The idea is to sail in the morning, have lunch and start building the bonfire as soon as the tide goes out. The event gets organised by the whole social team and food will be provided, of course! (I don't know what yet, I'll let you know as soon as possible). Fireworks aren't allowed on the beach, but we are planning a Guy competition. We will also watch the fireworks displays all along the coast. If you have any combustibles, you can bring them a few days in advance.
More details closer to the time.
