Coming soon: Cobnor weekend
Twice a year, Crawley Mariners YC organises a residential sailing weekend in Cobnor. The next weekend is coming soon, from 15th to 17th October. Unfortunately, none of our youths could make it this time, except Elodie who jumped at the chance to go again. CMYC offers 4 places and Lancing SC provides 2 instructors and sometime a boat.
This time, Mark and Georgi will be helping people to improve their sailing skills and have great fun! Ask anyone who has taken part in one of these weekends and they will tell you how much fun it is. Read Katie's impressions of her first Cobnor weekend in a back issue of Anchorline. No need to say that Katie took part several times since, first as a trainee then as an instructor.
Next year's dates are not set in stone yet but they usually happen in the middle of April. Diana Thompson, who organises the whole event at CMYC, is keen to have names early, so let us know if you're interested!

Bonfire Night in November

This year, our bonfire night will take place on Sunday 7th November.
Racing will be 2 races back-to-back in the morning so come sailing, have a hot meal for lunch and relax with friends while waiting for the tide to go out.
As soon as we have enough beach, we'll build the bonfire. Bring everything you'd like to burn (no fibreglass)!
We'll light the bonfire at 6pm.
There will be a Guy competition, hot-dogs and burgers in the evening.
Bring your sparklers to see who can write their names in light!
Please let us know how many are coming so we can cater. Drop me an email or call me on 01273 703512 for more info.
Wrap up warm and see you there!

RS Feva team racing
On Saturday 11th September, the two Youths Fevas were loaded on a trailer to be taken to Hedgecourt Lake, home of Crawley Mariners YC. There, our two boats joined Crawley's four Fevas to create two teams of three boats. With two juniors from Lancing and a dozen from Crawley Mariners, RYA coach Tim Ellis spend a very busy day unravelling the tricks of team racing.
Despite strong gusts taking some participants unaware, everyone enjoyed the close racing, the tactics as general fun of the day. With prizes for everyone at the end of the day, organisers Diana Thompson and Donal Roche were on a winner!
See our photo gallery of the day and re-visit other moments of Lancing SC life on our Galleries page.

Club boats and youth Fevas
In 2010 Lancing Sailing Club has acquired two club boats, a Topper and a Laser, for use by any club member who wants to try sailing these dinghy classes without supervision, and assuming you have some basic sailing skills. This in no way changes the existing ethos, that our club members generally buy their own dinghies for use at the club, but does provide an opportunity to try out these specific dinghies, possibly before deciding what dinghy to purchase. Alternatively, you may simply want to try sailing or racing at the club, before you make any major financial commitment on a boat.
However, you do need to join the club before you can book and use the club dinghies. They can be used in light and moderate wind (max f4), weather and sea conditions only, and within the skill level of the member concerned. It is not intended that any individual uses these dinghies on a long-term basis, instead of acquiring their own.
In addition, the club has now two youth boats, RS Fevas, kindly provided through the Youth Opportunities Fund available for use by our juniors, targeted primarily at 13 – 18yr olds. Younger juniors can use them with appropriate support and supervision, if they are not being used by teenagers. N.B. These particular dinghies are not available for use by adult members, unless they are supporting a junior helm/crew.
If you are interested in using a club or youth boat, the booking book (including LSC terms and conditions) is kept in the club entrance foyer.

Preparing 2011
With November and the AGM round the corner, the main and sailing committees are putting together the calendar for next year.
Through the Lancing SC forum and at the club, people express their preferences, give their feedback or voice their concerns. Both committees take their remarks on board to create a calendar that will please the most.
We are not sure of the dates for the open meetings yet but I can tell you that the first day back will be 3rd April. With Easter Sunday on 24th April, it's going to be a busy start of the year!
As many members acknowledged, the social side of the club hasn't been too prominent this year. The 50th anniversary celebration weekend was a great success and the organisers have done a cracking job. However, a lack of volunteers meant that very little happened since. Our club is a members' club, where everybody chips in. With busy lifestyles and a diversity of commitments, it's only too easy to think that "Somebody else will do it." Well, take a second to think these "somebody elses" also have commitments elsewhere, and jobs, and kids, and still manage to keep the club run smoothly.
I'm not asking you to sign your life away. With enough people sharing tasks, it makes everyone's life easier. It's our club, all of us. Give us a hand!
