Sailing news
Commodore's Cup
It's done it again! Massive waves crashing on the beach prevented any attempt at launching any sort of boat, so racing had to be cancelled this Sunday (22 Oct). There's still next week...
More windy and gusty conditions last week, with a good force 4 easterly wind, gusting to 6 in the afternoon. Two races went on, under the expert supervision of David Trout, and the swift response of the rescue crew. They had their work cut out, since most of the fleet capsized at one time or the other. The Topper fleet got a little puzzled to see one of the Topper marks in the "wrong" place, and nothing else obviously floating about for them to go round. They dutifully followed Nick until Brad got an idea of the layout and shamelessly overtook our Topper captain and won the race.
Red was the colour of the day: that big spinnaker flapping in the wind had a tinge of grey after too many capsizes, but Steve Lynch stole the show in the afternoon! After splitting his scalp open on the second lap, he went on racing and was disappointed because a capsize in the last lap cost him the race. Battered, bruised and bleeding, he went back to the clubhouse for a cup of tea and a sitdown, then packed his boat and said he'd do better next week! Better make sure the first-aid box is ready for action.
You can view a few more action shots from Sunday 8th October in the photo gallery. Very much the same weather and the same crowd this week. Results so far are available on the RESULTS page.
Series results
Thanks to Mike, all results are up-to-date in the Results page. The long AM series concluded at the end of September with a clear victory for Ian Beale on his RS400 in the fast fleet, while Andy Carter won the Laser fleet after a healthy battle with Paul Fewster. In the Topper fleet, Jennifer Austin managed to stay on top but Joey gave her a run for her money. Well done to all of you.
More asymmetric exploits in the Summer PM series, with Karen Littlejohn and John McGrath winning the series. Alan Simmons unashamedly took advantage of Jim Powell's absence to clock another victory with his Streaker. The series wasn't best attended by the Topper fleet, but Brad Phillips had two good results and came first.
Surely, all competitors are keen to start the next battle!

Social news
The Pie & Mash night organised by the Taylor and Trout families attracted plenty of interest, even when we realised that the evening was themed as a Sweeney Tod night. The kitchen was out of bounds for anyone who wanted to live a little older, but the pies were delicious, and the ice-cream gorgeous. Thanks John!
Sue and Anne gave us a quiz sheet to fill in between courses and "guesswork" was the operative word on our table. Thank you very much to Anne, Sue, David and John for their hard work.
Bonfire Night Our next event: the Bonfire Night will take place on Sunday 5th November. The idea is to sail in the morning, have lunch and start building the bonfire as soon as the tide goes out. The event gets organised by the whole social team and food will be provided, of course! Fireworks aren't allowed on the beach, but we are planning a Guy competition. We will also watch the fireworks displays all along the coast. If you have any combustibles, you can bring them a few days in advance. Dave Carter has posted a message on the bulletin board about this event. If you have anything to feed the fire, please let him know, thank you.
