Project of solar panels on club roof

Solar Energy for LSC

Over the last few months, the main committee has been thinking about making the most of the roof and place solar panels on the clubhouse. Mike and Di Croker, who have installed panels on their own roof, have created a precise and informative presentation on the project. Read all about it in the .pdf file Solar Energy for LSC?

AM series and Summer PM ended on 25 September

Before the start of a race earlier this year

Running from the 1st May to 25th September with a break in June, the Class AM/handicap series is one of the longest in our calendar. It is also a highly-regarded series, especially amongst Laser sailors, as class racing is practised at its craftiest. It's good to be fast but certainly not enough against our best tacticians!

In the fast fleet, Pete Matthews enrolled two charming ladies to take turns at crewing his RS500 and help him beat Matt Carter by one point. Jerry Hone is close third with 0.4 of a point behind Matt.
In the Laser + fleet, there was no contest. With only 5 points and 5 races to count, it would have been hard to beat Jack Tattersall. David Trout and Jim Powell have given their best shots and finish within a point of each other.
In the Topper + fleet, things were much closer! Isabelle gets the series by 0.1 of a point on Andy Skipton-Carter and his dream team, and Angela Davey in third place is at 0.7 of a point of the second. How's that for close racing!

The Summer PM series was a quieter affair, with half of the races lost to inclement conditions. In the fast fleet, Matt Carter was unstoppable on his RS700 while in the Laser + fleet, Alan Simmons on his Streaker got the upper hand. In the Topper +, Andrew Trevis asserted himself as a strong contestant for the Topper Novice Trophy by getting a well-deserved second place.

Complete race results are available on our Results page. Congratulations to all competitors!

Come and sail the Commodore's Cup!

Throughout the month of October, the morning and afternoon races belong to the same series, the Commodore's Cup. The format is very similar to last year, with one exception: the afternoon race starts at 1.30pm to avoid feeling the cold during lunchbreak.
The notices of race for all series are summarised in our Notices of race page on this website.

Commodore’s Cup

  • 2 races per day 1AM 1PM.
  • Fast/Med/Slow-Triangle/Sausage.
  • Inner course for slow. PY handicaps.
  • New for 2011: 1.30pm start in the afternoon

 Average points for duties

Earlier in the year, an article on this site explained how the newly-introduced "Average points for duties" worked.

  • 15.2 A helm who is on duty during a race as Race Officer, Assistant Race Office, Primary Rescue Boat Helm or Crew, or one of the two Canteen staff shall be awarded average points for that race.
  • 15.3 The number of times that this award can be used in a series is limited by the number of races sailed as follows:
    Greater than 10 2
    4-10 1
    1-3 None
  • 15.4 Average points shall be calculated at the end of the series and shall be the average of all the races in which they were ranked as a starter. Should they have more than one entry in a series then the average points will be awarded to the entry in which they have been a ranked as a starter the most times.

Average points for duty

This explains the unusual results seen this year, where people are sometimes separated by 0.1 of a point. This rather close contest happened in the Topper + fleet at the end of the Class AM / Handicap series. Angela was leading the series until the last race but both Andy Skipton-Carter and Isabelle sneaked in front of her as they counted the average of their results in place of a duty. Last year only, they would have been credited with a DNC, putting 16 points on their result. As Nick Muggridge said: "(..)this is a vindication of introducing average points for duties!"

 Bonfire Night on 6th November

Bonfire night in 2010

Every year, Lancing SC organises a bonfire on the first Sunday of November. This year, this event will take place on Sunday 6th November 2011. We will be racing the Winter series at that time, which means two races back-to-back in the morning.

After lunch, we will build the bonfire under the high water line and wait for the night to come.
There is a guy competition open to everyone and we will light the fire at 6pm.

With a hot dog or a burger from the kitchen, it's going to be a lovely evening to enjoy the flames! When the tide comes in, the bar will still be open and we will finish the evening inside.

We need plenty of stuff to burn so, if you have wood of all sorts, as well as cardboard or even the odd dead boat (no fibreglass), please bring it on the Saturday! Please contact Isabelle on 01273 703512 for more info. See you there!

Prizegiving party with a new format

During the summer, Karen McGrath submitted a questionnaire to all members she could find, regarding their wishes for the Dinner & Dance. Many of us thought the traditional approach was too formal and wished for a more relaxed event, without dropping the food, the music or the prizes!

In answer to the feedback, Karen has put lots of efforts in securing a date for the prizegiving party 2011. You might have received an email on 26th September, asking to "Save the Date" of Saturday 26th November.

There are just a few more details to finalise. More information very soon!

New Lancing SC page on Facebook

A long time ago, I created a Facebook group open to everyone, to broaden communication between club members. Recently, Facebook has revamped the functionalities for the new groups, without updating the old-style groups. In short, it means that the news for LSC don't show in people's newsfeed any longer. To remedy this, I have put together a page for Lancing Sailing Club. Click on the Like and the latest news will appear in your newsfeed. As before, you can write on the wall, share photos and befriend other people who like the page. Come along and have a look!
