Feva Team racing and Cobnor, sign up now!

Just like last year, Crawley Mariners YC are organising a great event on Saturday 10th September: a day of team racing and coaching with Tim Ellis, RYA coach. Both LSC youth Fevas are going to take part and we're looking for helms and crews to make up a team. If you're under 18, Georgi and Elodie will give you all the details. For more info, email topperfleet@lancingsc.org.uk.

Last year, Elodie had a brillant day and wrote her feedback in Anchorline, our newsletter.

Feva Fun

Team Racing is different approach to racing. It is very skilled and a lot of fun when you do it right! The aim of the game is to be able to get all of your team boats over the finish line before the other team.

On the 11th September, Ellie Mayes and I set off with the 2 club RS Fevas to Crawley Mariners base, Hedgecourt Lake. There was a briefing beforehand by Tim Ellis, an instructor from the RYA. He told us the basics and what course we had to do. Overall, there were enough bodies to fit into 6 Fevas.

In the afternoon, we had another briefing and we were arranged into 2 teams of three. That was when the racing started! There was a lot of close racing and good tactics (mostly using the rules against each other!) but after a few rain showers, capsizes and close encounters, we called it a day and headed in.

After a nice warm shower and all the boats packed away, there was a debrief including flapjacks and hot chocolate! A few prizes were handed out then the team racing was done for the day.

Ellie and some Crawley Mariners members said that it was a fun and successful day and they want to do another one sometime. If we get invited along again it would be good to see more youths getting involved and helping out.

Team coaching and racing with Crawley Mariners on 10th September

 Cobnor weekend in October

Crawley Mariners YC organises plenty of activities for their youth members, including residential sailing weekends twice a year, in Cobnor Activities Centre, and offers places to a few youths of our club. This time, the weekend is from 14th to 16th October and two places are for grabs! Arrive on the Friday evening, have a brilliant time and leave on Sunday afternoon, exhausted and loaded with smelly sailing kit - isn't that the recipe for a great weekend?

Plenty of Lancing SC youths have benefitted from the Cobnor weekends. For any details, feedback and general enthusiasm, please talk to Ellie, Maisie, Ella, Georgi, Katie, Elodie, etc. If you'd like to book a place, it's now or never. Diana Thompson from CMYC is gathering application forms and would like an answer before next week. Call Isabelle on 01273 703512 for an application form. A weekend worth every penny!

 Last Wednesday evening barbecue

The Wednesday evening series spans half our sailing calendar and always has a special place in the season. Glorious sunsets, fast reaches or dropping sea breeze are just a few things keeping helms on their toes.
After sailing, the appeal of a great fish&chips and a drink at the bar has kept the club lively until quite late in the evenings. The personal handicap, based on the handicap of the boat and the performance of the helm, gives everyone a chance to win races or even the whole series. It is the perfect series for beginners, as their handicap - usually generous - allows them to beat flat out more competitive sailors. See the results in the Results 2011 page and see who's going to win!

This year, the last Wednesday is on 7th September with a barbecue planned, whatever the weather. Racing starts at 6pm and the barbecue will be ready at 7.30pm. It's Pay-As-You-Go, with nice burger and salad for £2.50 and hot-dog for £1.50. On top of that, the bar will be open so come along!

 Hello to all new members

After the success of the latest Have-A-Go day, we are happy to welcome new members to Lancing Sailing Club. To help people familiarise with the club, the sailing committee organises regular "Buddy sessions", introducing the club boats and hopefully getting people on the water. However, the weather has recently decided otherwise and new members haven't been able to go sailing yet. The next session is planned for Sunday 11th September only if the weather forecast is promising. Our sailing secretary, Gary Austin, will be emailing an update by Thursday. If you are interested but haven't received any emails yet, please contact Gary on sailingsec@lancingsc.org.uk.

New Lancing SC page on Facebook

A long time ago, I created a Facebook group open to everyone, to broaden communication between club members. Recently, Facebook has revamped the functionalities for the new groups, without updating the old-style groups. In short, it means that the news for LSC don't show in people's newsfeed any longer. To remedy this, I have put together a page for Lancing Sailing Club. Click on the Like and the latest news will appear in your newsfeed. As before, you can write on the wall, share photos and befriend other people who like the page. Come along and have a look!

 A O & T regatta - results

The AOT regatta - what a strange name... It is a combination of the Atkins Trophy, the Owen Memorial Shield and the... Toppers. Anyway, it is a mini-series of 6 races, taking place over the weekend on the August Bank holiday. One race in the morning, two short races back-to-back in the afternoon, 3 fleet with separate starts, PY handicap for everyone, do it again on the Monday and that's it!

Laser Bonanza and Totally Topper Time

Fingers crossed, the Laser Bonanza and Totally Topper time might be happening on Sunday 18th September, depending on the weather. Gary and Dave will be contacting helms closer to the time, if the weather forecast is promising. In the meantime, pencil in the date and keep an eye on Wind Guru!

If you're not on our mailing list, please drop a line to Gary on lancingscnews@gmail.com and he will add your name to the list.
