Coming soon: Sunday lunch on 29th January
Even if there's no sailing involved, Lancing SC never stays still! To keep in touch during the winter, why not come to our Sunday lunch on 29th January? It's a 3-course meal with coffee, in the clubhouse (limit is 40 guests). Book soon and, for £8 per person, you get together with friends, enjoy a relaxed meal and have fun. The bar will be open, of course!
Call Mark or Isabelle on 01273 703512 to book a place or email info@lancingsc.org.uk. Don't forget to mention any dietary requirements. See you all there!

Lancing members in winter series
Some people cannot stand the idea of being off the water until April. Those hardy souls are now sailing winter series disputed in other clubs in the region. If you'd like to follow their progress, here's a sample:
Of course, this list shows only a few of the members and friends I know about. If you are taking part in a winter series or if you know of someone, please drop me a line at webmaster@lancingsc.org.uk. Thanks!

Work parties and bosun jobs
Prior to the work parties in March, Derek Savidge, our new bosun, is compiling a list of jobs to be done around the club. If you have noticed that something needs fixing and you made a mental note ("Hmmm... somebody should do something about this..."), please let Derek and all helpers know by posting on the Lancing SC forum board called Bosun jobs.
This year, there will be three work parties in March, chosen to avoid clashes with the Dinghy Show and Mother's Day.
Derek will keep the forum board updated on jobs to do and tools to bring. Each work party starts at 9.30am. All Lancing Sailing Club members are expected to take part in at least one work party. This helps keep the costs of maintenance down and get people together. You don't need to be good at DIY or be strong. Lots of jobs require little effort and, as the saying goes, the more the merrier!

Sailing programme: a sneak peek
The sailing committee are busy putting the final touches to the 2012 sailing calendar. Compiling all dates, matching series and tides and open events and socials, etc. is not an easy task! A few dates to keep us waiting:
On top of those dates, there will be two Have-a-Go days, the Laser Open, the Topper Open and a pursuit race. Social events will include a bike ride early in the spring, the Prizegiving Party and bonfire night in November, and a big event in the summer. More about it soon!

Book your duties now!
Now, about those duties... I know, it's not always fun but someone has to do it... Our duty rota manager, Di Croker, is currently working hard on the calendar for 2012 and would like everyone to help. She has posted a questionnaire on the forum and would appreciate a prompt answer. Please remember that our club is not a commercial venture where we can pay outsiders to cover the gaps: if someone doesn't do their duty, it penalises someone else, as they need to step in.
Have a look at the questionnaire, contact Di and she will put the duties for 2012 on Dutyman, where you can swap if something crops up. Even if you are not a regular sailor, duties are entertaining: you get to know people in the canteen, you see how racing works from the race box or you get to have a go at the powerboat on safety duty. Can't be that bad!

Georgi chosen as Olympic torchbearer
Georgi's mum is great. Mums often are, but Georgi's mum, one day, decided to nominate her elder daughter to be an Olympic torch-bearer. Georgi and Judy (aka Mum) sent emails, gathered support and hoped for the best.
The best happened early December when a Facebook post arrived from the deepest Australia where Georgi is currently working. She is one of the lucky 8,000 persons whose contribution to sports in this country has been recognised and will have the privilege to carry the Olympic flame for a short while. She will be back in the UK in March with this special event to look forward to, worse things could happen!
If you don't know Georgi, she is a Topper and Contender sailor, working as an instructor in Lagoon Watersports during the summer. She is dynamic, enthusiastic, helpful and very knowledgeable about sailing. She's probably very suntanned now as well.
The official London 2012 Olympics website details the route of the flame and, in the page dedicated to the South-East, we can see that the torch will be in Lancing on Monday 16th July, the day after our Family Fun Weekend. Now, there's an idea for a theme...

Topper League results for 2011
The Topper League 2011 closed on the last day of sailing, on 27th December. The Topper Novice trophy deadline is at the end of the Commodore's Cup, as many juniors are not so keen on sailing in the winter. Mind you, we have seen a few Toppers in the Winter series this year!
The Topper league is regularly updated in the Results page, with a breakdown of points for each helm. Click on the graph to view the details. In the Topper league, helms in blue are competing for the Topper Novice Trophy.

New Lancing SC page on Facebook
A long time ago, I created a Facebook group open to everyone, to broaden communication between club members. Recently, Facebook has revamped the functionalities for the new groups, without updating the old-style groups. In short, it means that the news for LSC don't show in people's newsfeed any longer. To remedy this, I have put together a page for Lancing Sailing Club. Click on the Like and the latest news will appear in your newsfeed. As before, you can write on the wall, share photos and befriend other people who like the page. Come along and have a look!
