League and awards

At the Dinner&Dance every year, series winners are awarded their trophies, engraved glasses and other silverware. Other trophies are given to sailors who may not have won any series. A quick summary can be found below.

The Topper League counts Topper performances throughout the year and gets updated almost weekly. The winner of the Topper League also gets an award at the Dinner & Dance.

Topper League and Topper novice trophy

Nick Muggridge, Lancing SC Topper fleet captain for many years, has devised a successful format for the Topper League. Nick has given the new fleet captains a set of guidelines, as well as the precious spreadsheet for 2011.

Topper League points

Basic setup
One point for every boat each helm beats in race (including those who retire, or get DSQ, but not DNS or DNC), plus one point for racing at all, plus a bonus for first three places in that race … 1st +3pts, 2nd +2pts, 3rd +1pt. So any boat that comes last scores just one point, if no-one has retired. Retired boats all score 1pt.

If the race is a handicap race then each Topper can count any boat it beats.

When calculating each weeks league points it is easiest to take the results from the individual race results published on LSC website by Mike, rather than the series results which include all helms who have sailed in a series.

The only races scored differently are personal handicap races e.g Weds ev. In these races you take the Topper League points from the published PY results rather than the personal handicap results used for the series trophy. This is because otherwise personal handicaps would distort the league points.

Topper Novice trophy

Similarly, Nick has given guidelines to the allocation of the Topper novice trophy for the year

Topper Novice
Our definition is any helm who has never won a Topper trophy (meaning overall winner) in any series, in previous years; and who has raced Toppers for 3yrs or less. At the start of a season, the fleet captain decide which helms still count as novices based on the previous years. Should any of them then win a series in the year, they could still win the novice trophy at the end (as Alex did in 2010). Obviously any winner of the novice trophy is then NOT a novice!

The Topper League runs for the entire season. However, the Topper Novice trophy is awarded to the highest placed novice in the league at the end of the Commodores Cup series. The top places in the league (used only for personal trophies awarded at D&D) are based on the whole year results.

The Topper League results are regularly published in our News page and in the page dedicated to the results of the year. Helms in blue all compete for the Topper novice trophy.

 Keith Mynard trophy

Originally, the Keith Mynard trophy was awarded to the best improving Streaker sailor of the year. With fewer Streakers on the water, the trophy has been opened to all fleets.

The Keith Mynard trophy should be awarded to an adult sailor who has shown considerable improvement during the season, without winning a series. After looking at the results for the year, the fleet captains select sailors in each fleet and all the members of the sailing committee allocate points to each name. The sailor with the highest score is awarded the Keith Mynard trophy.

For more details, please ask a fleet captain or any member of the sailing committee who will be happy to help.
